Do I have to like them?

It really started when I was 12. That is when we moved here, to this place that I hate. My Mom would always answer each of my complaints with " Give it time, you will like it." I gave it time. 29 years in fact and I still hate it. I hate the way they laugh, the way they talk, the way they think that they are smarter then everyone else. I hate everything about them. But what I really hate the most is the way the smell. It is the worst smell I have ever smelled. It is like over cooked hot dogs left out in the sun for too long. I thought I would get used to it but I never have. I do not like them and I do not like it here. I tried, I really did, but I am not like my sister. She is happy here. She even married one of them and has a child. She is starting to smell like them. My Mom and Dad won't come with me, they want to stay here and be close to there grandchild, plus they say they like it here. But as soon as the ship arrives next month, the first time in 29 years, I will be on it. I am going home to where everyone smells like a fresh sweet flower. It will be sad to leave my family. But I am done here. I tried to like them, but I realize now , I do not have to. I mean because really Earth Stinks! I mean that literally, it really really stinks here and I have been holding my breath for 29 years.

nice post, it reminds me of the many, many times I moved to a new place as a child, I hated it and never wanted to fit in- or like them. I was and am different from them all..and I too want to go home to a place I can feel good.
I wish for you to find your place that smells like wonderful flowers :)

Wow - I've tried to hold my breath for 60 seconds to get rid of hiccups, but 29 years, I give you credit!! ;0)

But, I hear ya - it does stink here, but, sometimes for me, the smell of fresh cut grass, a new rose bloom, fresh rain in the Spring, or even my husband after a shower, smell pretty darn good! Try it! You might likey!! =)

Just get away from people and there are some very nice smells on earth - such as the acrid scent of water touching dry soil, roses and lavender, new cut lawns, ocean air, pine trees... This, however, is a very brief and eloquent science fiction story. I like it.

Nice sci-fi piece. I read-read it to make sure 'she' was from somewhere else but I've been known to be wrong! Nicely done!

Vivid description. Got to start searching for the nice things that accompanied you along the long 29 years journey.

Just found your work by chance today and it's been great to have a read of your pieces. Thanks for sharing. I love 'Fairy tale hair' and 'The guide' and this latest piece is reminding me of how my town smelled when I came back from a week in the mountains!

There's something haunting about your pieces that I just love - like the character stays with me......Thanks and hope to read more soon.

Do I have to make a similar comment on your blog each and every week? Fabulous, as always. A joy to read each week.

First Rod Serling gets me with the "To serve man" cookbook thing. Then that M. Night Shyamalan guy gets me with the whole "I see dead people" thing and now I find out your not only a fantastic writer, but your not even from this planet! Great writing
